Melanie Assiniwe

Melanie Assiniwe, an Anishinaabe-kwe from the unceded territory of Wiikwemikoong, Ontario is deeply guided by the Seven Grandfather Teachings, which shape her approach to helping Indigenous communities across Turtle Island. Her understanding of Indigenous traditions and values is integral to her work, ensuring they are reflected in her professional and community efforts.

Melanie began her career as a Staff Accountant at KPMG. She then served as Wahnapitae First Nation’s Director of Finance and a part-time professor at Cambrian College, where she shared her expertise with the next generation of leaders. Currently, she is the Director of Capacity Development and Intervention with the First Nations Financial Management Board. In this role, she builds meaningful relationships with First Nations, Tribal Councils, non-profits, and government partners advancing Indigenous finance and governance practices.

Her social impact efforts include supporting the Financial Literacy Working Group for Indigenous People and the Tulo Centre of Indigenous Economics. Her peers have noted that she is an exemplary role model for Anishinaabe women in the accounting profession – and for her Indigenous relations overall.
