Annual Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Audit

Regulatory Standard Edition: August 2024 | Published: August 20, 2024

Each year, CPA Ontario audits a selection of continuing professional development (CPD) declarations. Selected members will be notified in September and asked to provide detailed information through My Portal to support their 2024 Annual CPD declarations.

The current annual – as well as the triennial – CPD year ended on December 31, 2023. Selected members will be notified in September to provide detailed information through My Portal to support their declarations.

CPD requirements ensure that Chartered Professional Accountants (CPAs) maintain certain competency levels throughout their careers.

Members are reminded that their CPD must:

  • be relevant to their professional responsibilities as a CPA
  • be quantifiable, meaning that it must be specifically identifiable and be able to be expressed in terms of a specific time requirement
  • contain significant intellectual or practical content
  • include four ethics hours in each triennial period

Members who hold a Public Accounting Licence are cautioned that the submission of a CPD exemption or declaration of non-compliance may impact their eligibility to apply for or renew a licence.

Additionally, PAL holders are reminded that their required CPD hours must be completed in activities directly related to the competencies needed to engage in the practice of public accounting and in compliance with International Education Standard (IES) 8.

It is a member’s responsibility to retain relevant CPD documentation for five years, and in a single place for ease of access in case they are selected for audit. If you have recently left an employer, please ensure you contact them to obtain your records.

If you are selected, you will be required to complete this audit through My Portal. To avoid suspension and potential revocation, you must submit the required information no later than the deadline.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact a Registrar’s Office representative by email at [email protected].
